(Newswire.net — July 15, 2013) Tampa, Fl — Plantation shutters are essentially a window shutter that has a number of different louvers or “blades” and these can be controlled with one piece of wood.  These can be used for either windows or doors.  The real benefit of plantation shutters is ease of use via this one control wood piece, but also they enable one to control both light and airflow.  Generally, a plantation shutter starts at 3” wide and can be significantly wider.  Narrower than that, would define a “traditional” or “louver” shutter that are referred sometimes as slats. Their width is commonly 1” to 2” in width but can be as wide up to 3”.

Other differences are that plantation shutters can scale the entire height of a wall whereas louvered shutters typically cover the bottom half of a window.  Plantation shutters are also generally made of wood.  In addition to providing a high degree of privacy from the outside, they can block direct light which often times is attractive in order to save furniture and interiors of rooms from fading.  They are quite fungible in the different type of window types that they can fit i.e. rounded.  With varying room sizes, this flexibility is a nice feature.

Accordion Shutters are another type which is actually misnamed since this shutter actually is a folding shutter which connects two or more panels together which will allow them to open in the same direction.  Where they differ from plantation shutters which only have one per window, accordion shutters ordinarily have two sets whereby one opens left and the other, right.  These shutters can be used for interior as well as exterior of different materials.  When made for exterior use, they tend to be more popular in hurricane-prone areas.  So from a functional standpoint, their purpose serves to protect from extreme weather.

There are also exterior vinyl shutters that are utilized primarily for aesthetic design use.  When installed, they are bolted or screwed into the exterior of a home and since its intention is decorative, they do not provide exterior protection.  The vinyl material makes them weather resistant and quite durable.
