Goodyear Flower Shop “Wins” The Goodyear Award for 2013?

(Newswire.net — September 29, 2013) {City}, {State} Recently a local flower shop in Goodyear, Arizona was given a 2013 award in the Florists classification. However, when Thompson’s Flower Shop was trying to accept the award, they discovered there was a “fee” to receive it.

It came to light that a website called AwardProgram.org was giving away this award as a way to entice business owners to purchase an Award plaque or trophy. The company sends an email to the supposed award recipient and states it’s a part of their local city. It sounds very professional, authentic, and even offers a number and website to contact. When researching this company however, no such award exists.  Instead, the “winners” are offered a chance to simply buy their own award.

Thompson’s Flower Shop is an honest and legitimate business who has won real awards in the past. However, while trying to research The Goodyear Award Program, their marketing company, Local Business Rockstar, exposed the award as a fraud.  The owners, Sean and Cynthia Thompson, became instantly disappointed that theye were nearly tricked into publicly announcing they’d won the “award” by posting it on their website.

The owners also run Thompson Funeral Home, which has won various legitimate business awards. When asked about the award, Cynthia D. Thompson had this to say, “I am upset that we almost got scammed by this Goodyear Award Program. We ensure that we provide only the highest quality products and services to all of our customers. Accepting and promoting this fake award could have caused us to lose credibility within the community because others might have thought we were in on the scam.”

Similar “award programs” have been appearing in multiple states: Florida, California, Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Connecticut. In fact the Better Business Bureau has warned about programs such as these whose email messages are almost identical to another company who also solicits to small businesses (US Commerce Association). The website for the BBB warning is here: http://wisconsin.bbb.org/article/bbb-warns-businesses-of-local-vanity-award-scam-38568
