(Newswire.net — October 18, 2013) Chicago, Illinois — The Chicago History Museum is reaching out to the people for suggestions. The museum is looking for fresh, original ideas for a future exhibit. In a city rich in history there are many, many stories to be told. This is an opportunity to have your stories, ideas and suggestions seen and heard.
Everywhere we look, everywhere we are there is history happening if we are aware and conscious of it. Even a moment or meeting that may seem insignificant may be a moment that becomes important in history.
It has been said that history is the story told by the victors but there is much, much more to tell, know, learn from and celebrate. Here is an opportunity to do just that.
The Chicago History Museum is Chicago’s oldest cultural institution.
In 1856 the state legislature passed an act founding the Chicago Historical Society. In 1857 it was incorporated. As the collection grew, the society moved into their first building at Ontario and Dearborn.
Unfortunately, the building and most of original collection were destroyed in the Chicago 1871 fire. A second fire three years later destroyed most of the remaining collection.
In 1920 the museum added thousands of manuscripts, hundreds of paintings and historical artifacts. These came from the estate of Charles F. Gunther. These include George Washington’s compass and the bed where Abraham Lincoln died.
The collection continued to grow.
In 1932 the museum opened its doors in Lincoln Park at Clark Street at North Avenue. The Georgian Colonial building remains the society home today. It has had additions, renovations and improvements over the years.
Chicago Historical Society changed its name to the Chicago History Museum in 2006. 75 percent of the public space was renovated. The renovation included a new museum store, lobby, exhibitions and galleries.
Chicago is rich with history and history in the making. It is a multicultural city. Chicago is a city that was a new home and still is a new for people from all over the world. It is an architectural masterpiece. There are stories on every street. There are stories on every corner, in every family, every business, and every restaurant.
Chicago is a world center.
It is a center for theatre. It is not like theatre in other cities. There are over 500 shows going at any one time. In Chicago anyone can create and put on a show as this city nurtures art in all forms. Chicago is the home of Improv. Every January people come to perform and see the world’s largest sketch fest.
Chicago has transformed how people relate to their buildings, their work, and their families and to other cultures. Our current president came from Chicago.
What better place to look than to the community for history.
Chicago is a uniquely human city. It is grand history and architecture on a human scale. It is this way we relate to history more than as facts and figures. The Chicago History Museum shows history real life about real people, people that we can empathize with and relate to. A visit there can be life transforming as we see how a person, a real person might have lived, suffered, succeeded and thrived. Some overcame adversity and some were overcome.
As in most contests, there can be only one winner.
The stories that come forward, the suggestions that are made and read by others do not vanish. They live on the minds and consciousness of the reader. Submit your suggestions as the Chicago History Museum Contest itself is becoming the history seen by the future.
