In August, the Federal Reserve announced that banks are now lending more money than at any time since October 2008, prior to the beginning of the recession. Statistics released by the Federal Reserve in July showed that banks had $7.33 trillion in outstanding loans, compared with $7.32 trillion in October 2008, the previous credit peak. The Federal Reserve’s most recent survey of lenders showed that banks are making strides toward easing restrictions on consumers to make it easier for them to get loans for homes, cars and credit cards. The ratio of loans to deposits increased for the first time since early 2012, an indication that banks are now more willing to loan money. Although statistics have not yet increased for consumer loans, the availability of funds and free lending practices are positioning lenders to pass the benefit along to the consumer.
