Facebook, Authority Sites Reset Passwords Following Adobe Hack

(Newswire.net — November 12, 2013) Miami, Florida — After Adobe disclosed last month that hackers were able to steal login information for about 38 million of their customers, Facebook and other popular internet companies are now concerned that their users might be affected by the incident.

Apparently, many internet users often use the same password across many different sites. So even if Facebook and other sites weren’t hit by this round of hacking, the Adobe hackers might be able to break into Facebook member accounts using recycled passwords.

The social media giant has taken a proactive step by requiring some of its members who it believes have the same passwords for their Adobe accounts to generate new ones.

“We know that there are going to be plenty of cases where those passwords were reused just based on knowledge of user habits across the Web,” Facebook spokesman Jay Nancarrow said.

Other internet companies are also scanning the list of stolen Adobe email addresses and passwords to see if their customers used the same combination.

Website security experts have repeatedly warned consumers against using the same password in all their internet accounts.

Moreover, the information stolen from Adobe was on a backup system with a relatively weak form of encryption – making it easier for hackers to figure out users’ passwords.

The breached system was set to be decommissioned, according to an Adobe spokesman.
