(Newswire.net — November 15, 2013) Chicago, Illinois — Sometimes an idea for a product is so on in concept and timing that all you can think is “I want it”. GoPro cameras are that. They are the right thing, done in the right way at the right time. It has the magic that businesses, investors and entrepreneurs dream about. GoPro struck the right chord with pro-athletes and with anyone that dreamed about sharing their amazing experiences with pictures and video. Now scientists are embracing the product as well.

The saying “necessity is the mother of invention” really applies to GoPro.

Maybe surfing, especially off the coast of California has some magical effect. That is how the idea of GoPro came to Nick Woodmen the creator. He grew up in the Silicon Valley area but did not excel in academics. He preferred sports. He does have the entrepreneurial spirit that Silicon Valley is known for. As with many brilliant entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley he does not fit into any mold.

After his first venture an online gaming company FunBug failed in the dotcom crash.

He needed to find something else, something new. He did what many great entrepreneurs do, he went surfing. There is magic in surfing. Just look at the Beachboys. How many surfers, skiers, skydivers, snowboarders, bikers, hunters, racecar drivers, snorkelers, horseback riders, polo players and all of us that have run to tell others of the cool thing we just did. No matter how good a storyteller you are, nothing compares with what you can see from a point of view video.

Opportunity happens when multiple things come together and someone is there.

You would think that with all the people over all the years in all the situations that have awkwardly held their camera while doing what they do that there could not be opportunity in that. That is exactly what made it an opportunity. Cameras were becoming better, lighter with higher definition. Sports of all kinds were becoming more extreme. YouTube came into being. Videos were and are being posted by the millions and seen worldwide. There is hunger for content and what better than video

GoPro came along and is

  –   Lightweight

  –   High definition video

  –   Waterproof to 131 feet

  –   Fun

  –   Inexpensive

The camera is not limited to sports.

Scientists find it gives them vision. It can be attached to equipment exploring the sea or lake. It has been attached to weather balloon that rose to over 90,000 feet. Not long ago what is being videoed today could only be done with high priced equipment. Price alone limited the possibilities. That is not so anymore.

The magic is in you.

The argument has been is GoPro a camera company or a company that makes mounts for cameras. It does not matter to those that love their camera. It seems to stimulate the imagination. Once in hand people become more creative. It opens doors to new experiences. Maybe there is magic in the waves off the California coast. Maybe the magic rubs off.
