Authentic African Leadership – Authentic African Leaders Defined and the Techniques that Made Them Great tells the untold South African stories of leadership courage, fortitude, and the desire to succeed against all odds.

Written by Gail Cameron, internationally acclaimed leadership coach and founder of the Image Excellence Group (IE Group), Authentic African Leadership is a compilation of true leadership stories written by top leaders in corporate South Africa who Cameron has coached over the past 20 years. The stories are compelling as they reflect authentic African leaders’ unique indigenous culture, values, norms, beliefs, historical underpinnings, traditions, but most importantly how each of the contributors to the book overcame enormous challenges – personal and professional to succeed against all odds.

Contributors to the book include Peter Mageza, previous COO Absa and first Black Absa executive; Michelle Nana, Company Secretary of Aveng and previous director at Cell C; Monica Singer, CEO of Strate JSE; Allen Swiegers, COO Deloitte; Sindi Koyane Mabaso, previous CFO Transnet/Prasa; General Ntsiki Memela-‐ Motumi, SANDF: the highest ranking female general in the history of the SA Defense Force; Selby Baqwa, former public protector and now judge in the North Gauteng High Court; Tom Winterboer, director: PricewaterhouseCoopers, financial services leader of South Africa and Africa; and Richard Zitha, General Manager Richards Bay Coal Terminal.

In South Africa there exists a leadership vacuum with many calling for a new leadership in the country, as corruption and crime seem out of control. This book will define implicitly excellent examples of diverse leadership styles as told by the leaders themselves, and includes valuable tips and techniques acquired along the way.

Each leader brings a unique profile, experience, approach, and application of leadership that will inform and inspire readers of the book. Each leader will explore in-‐depth a particular personal skill, expertise, or competence, from being the best ‘people’ leader to understanding how emotional intelligence enabled the leader to overcome the ‘Sacrifice Syndrome’ (burnout) and attain renewal.

These stories demonstrate that there exists an alternative practice to global leadership outside the widely accepted Western and US-‐centric leadership methodologies as mentioned in Turnbull’s Worldly Leadership

– Alternative Wisdoms. Turnbull suggests that an alternative view to global leadership is needed owing to four limitations:

(1) Global leadership is often shorthand for the applications of Western management practices in non-‐Western contexts;

(2) defining a set of universal traits for leadership is impossible;

(3) leadership is contextually driven; and

(4) leadership can be seen as a dynamic social process. The book will not only tell the stories of diverse African leaders against a dynamically evolving social backdrop, but will also set out the techniques and methodologies applied in becoming more effective leaders.
