Scottsdale Injury Lawyer Weighs Impact of Government Shutdown on Construction Accidents

(Newswire.net — November 26, 2013) Scottsdale AZ – Some people may not realize it, but the government shutdown affects construction site workers both in the private and public sector, warned seasoned personal injury lawyer Mike Nysather of the Wade & Nysather Law Office in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“Construction workers are the backbone of every industry. They build roads, houses and workplaces, aside from repairing and maintaining physical structures for the nation to continue running. To do this, they are at risk of many hazards and risks such as falls, noise, dust, equipment failures, electrical shock and suffocation,” said Nysather. “No wonder statistics show the most fatal injuries of any industry are in construction.”

The US Center for Disease Control lists injuries in construction accidents as the number one cause of occupation related fatalities in the private sector. Although the percentage has declined in recent years by more than 33 per cent, the decline in numbers is attributed to economic conditions rather than better safety awareness. The CDC cites that the slowdown in the economy has resulted in a reduced total number of hours worked in construction sites, thus, reducing the risks of exposure.

Nonetheless, construction related accidents are still a major cause of fatal injuries, such as that of a recent construction site accident in Arizona where a temporary support structure on the SR 24 project site collapsed in mid-June 2013. One worker was killed in the accident and another was seriously injured. The Arizona Department of Transportation (AZDOT) and the state’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration division imposed a work stoppage to determine the cause.

“A similar accident happening today when AZDOT and OSHA are closed due to the government shutdown will bring so much complication,” said Nysather. ‘It will affect the family of the victims’ compensations claim. Work may also be put to a halt indefinitely and this brings more financial hardships to the personal injury suffered by the victim and their families.”

Some of the most common accidents occurring in construction sites include:

● Falls from scaffolds/scaffolding accidents
● Electrical shocks
● Exposure to hazardous wastes
● Defective or malfunctioning equipment
● Ear damage

Construction site accidents can be prevented to a minimum through vigilance and adherence to standards of the industry. However, if an accident does happen and results in personal injury, an accident lawyer can help.
