We Are Living in the Age of the Geek

(Newswire.net — December 3, 2013) Salt Lake City, Utah — Every year, in the media, we see what used to be a small subculture of fan-based genres becoming more and more popular.  As big Hollywood spends more money each year on targeting Fantasy, Sci-Fi, comic book fans, etc, those of us who grew up with these interests get to see more and more of our childhood heroes come to life. Nowhere is this more prevalent than at Comic Book Conventions where fans would dress up as their favorite heroes and villains, what is called cosplay(costume play).

It used to be, if you wanted to attend a Comic Con, you’d have to travel to some far away big city, but as the genre becomes more popular, more conventions are taking place every year. For instance, Salt Lake City, UT, which is wonderfully centrally located for anyone in the Northwest United States, is holding two separate conventions alone. In September, 2013 they held their first Comic Con and it completely sold out of all 52,000 tickets and broke records for inaugural Comic Con Conventions and was featured in Forbes.com.

Facebook Fan Pages such as www.facebook.com/MadGeekery, www.facebook.com/DontHateTheGeek and the event’s own fan page www.facebook.com/SaltLakeComicCon, and other fan pages oriented and focused on Geek Culture are advantageous in targeting the audience that would attend such events, and that audience is growing daily as evidenced by the growing amount of traction such pages are getting in social media.

This April, in Salt Lake City, they are holding not one, but two conventions. The first of which is named The FanXperience, or the 2014 Salt Lake Comic Con and they are boasting an allstar cast for their speakers and panelists.  Headlining are Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flannery, known as the MacManus Brothers in the 1999 underground hit The Boondock Saints.  Norman Reedus is also one of the stars of The Walking Dead, AMC’s hit program about the zombie apocalypse. Also appearing at the convention are Adam Baldwin from Firefly, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden, and Michael Dorn which constitutes over half the main cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Also from The Boondock Saints will be David Della Rocco, also better known as the Green Ranger from the 1990’s Power Rangers is Jason David Frank and many more guests.

They expect this event to sell out of tickets just as the event in September did, but there are still plenty of tickets available for sale. I wouldn’t wait too long to reserve your tickets or try to get them at the door however, as it is becoming more and more clear that Geek Culture is taking over and becoming more relevant than ever before in our society. Geek Culture is here to stay.
