Webinars – or web conferencing as Wikipedia calls them – have been a quickly emerging channel for interactive workshops and online conferences in the recent few years. But the usage of professional webinars as a sales and marketing channel is still limited despite the significant potential to grow sales and reduce cost of sales for organisations. According to Marketingsherpa, webinars as a marketing channel are about as effective as SEO or Trade Shows but less difficult to implement.

Webinars have been available for some time and the technology is getting better and better. Two major providers of webinars based on internet technology are Citrix Online (with GoToWebinar) and Cisco (with webex). The services provide a rich functionality and are relatively easy to use. And they allow for webinars with hundreds or even thousands of attendees on a global scale.

But the use of webinars as a marketing and sales channels is still not that widespread despite the big advantages webinars provide. According to Michael Alf, Director totalu Pty Ltd., professional sales webinars need to be run in a very specific way and flow to make them as effective as they can be.

And Steven Essa, an international webinar expert, says that webinars – if run well – can create a conversion of 10% and more compared to a 1% conversion of a good website.

As Alf explains, key advantages of professional sales webinars are a high conversion, the leverage of time as webinars are presented to a large audience and the opportunity to automate webinars providing an ongoing sales channel for a business. Furthermore companies using webinars can deepen their client relationships by providing regular value add webinars. They can also create specific offerings sold via webinars and therefore create an additional revenue stream. Moreover organisations can easily expand with their offerings into other regions or even countries without the necessity to have a local presence.

Alf continues to explain that two successful strategies to run professional webinars are to assemble a presentation showing great content and adding value to the audience and then offer products and services at the end of the webinar. Another strategy is to interview experts in your niche and sell complementing products and services at the end of the interview.
