Cobi Narita, Founder of The Jazz Center of New York, announces a change of venue location for her regular series, the Friday night  “Open Mike: Jazz Jam Hosted by Mr. Frank Owens”. Formerly held at ZEBS on 28th street in NYC. The new location is located at 519 8th Ave. 12th floor in NYC.

It is indeed a rare opportunity for an aspiring singer, instrumental musician or tap dancer to meet and perform with the seasoned and sophisticated Mr. Frank Owens on the piano accompaniment. This series of “Open Mic” is supported by Cobi Narita and “The Jazz Center of New York”.

Mr. Owens, known throughout the entertainment world as pianist, composer and musical director to the stars, has taken it upon himself to mentor new talent and coach up and coming talent in the ways of song.

Whether it is choosing repertoire, coaching the performer or just encouragement, Frank Owens is “there for you” in every sense of the word.  Mr. Owens continues to inspire those seeking to experience their musical life and also those who are already committed and working earnestly to fine tune their music and dance skills.  He shares the stage, along with his suggestions, guidance and tips on performing, with both neophyte, acolyte, journeyman and professional alike.

Always at the ready with an encouraging word, an understanding nod or a well deceived compliment, Owens treats his guests with a gentleman’s demeanor and a firm hand on their creative explorations.

In the music business for over 50 years and working with such greats as Johnny Mathis, Lena Horne, Leslie Uggams, Chubby Checkers, Melba Moore, Connie Francis and many more, you are sure to be in good hands.

Of course there are the regulars, arriving early with sheet music, chord changes and a willingness to learn from a master. As they arrive they know the routine, the first ones to sign up are the first ones to perform. There also are the newcomers, arriving with trepidation, but none the less anxious to get on with it. If you want to perform, get there early and sign in.

One never knows who may drop in to perform or how many people will be in the audience, strictly to listen. One thing is sure, one is never disappointed by the varied talent and the level of creativity.

Ms. Narita (www.cobinarita.com) is known for tirelessly promoting jazz and jazz musicians since the late 60’s in New York. Her “Universal Jazz Coalition” was a major force in New York City for exposing young singers and musicians to the icons of jazz during the 70’s and 80’s.  Ms. Narita produced and sponsored the very first “Women’s Jazz Festival” in New York City in the Central Park Bandshell featuring such performers as Jeanne Lee, Janice Robinson and MaryLou Williams among others.

Mr. Owens (www.frankowensmusic.com) has extensive experience on Broadway, as Musical Director for the stars as well as TV and recording. Together they have brought an immeasurable wealth of jazz history to the newer generations of jazz lovers and performers alike. This year, March 8th, 2014, marks the 88th birthday of Cobi Narita.

They will be a special birthday party celebration at Swing 46 in NYC on Sunday March 9th, 2014 from 5pm to 9pm marking the occasion, featuring the The George Gee Orchestra.  Tickets, times and info below.

Cobi Narita continues to nurture and support the jazz community with these open mic series. With the support of Mr. Paul Ash, Narita’s husband of 41 years, who has been the lifeblood of Ms. Narita’s jazz work and the Chairman of the Board of Sam Ash Music stores, this open mic is a genuine New York experience.

Paul Ash suddenly and regrettably left this world on February 5th, 2014 from a massive heart attack, while in the hospital, on Long Island, NY.  Ms. Narita continues to produce, promote and support this event as well as other events Paul Ash has supported, keeping his life, memory and jazz flame alive through the arts. Check in on the Jazz Center of New York fan page on Facebook.

Upcoming Cobi Narita: Jazz Center of New York Productions concerts include The Billy Taylor Voices on February 23, 2014 at ZEBS on 28th ST. NYC and The Farewell Celebration of The Saeko Ichinohe Dance Company on February 23, 2014 at ZEBS NYC with guest of honor Saeko Ichinohe.
