Billy Harper brings his VOICES to ZEBS on Saturday, February 22, 2014 to further support the funding of his video concert filmed at St. Peters Church in NYC on December 1, 2012.         .

Mr. Harper is the fiery tenor saxophonist/composer who distinguishes himself from most other tenor saxophonists by his distinctive sound that is visceral, intense and decidedly modern.

While many tenor players try to emulate the softer sounds of Stan Getz, Lester Young or Dexter Gordon, Harper prefers the straight ahead, dynamic sounds from Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane and Albert Ayler. Musical content aside, but surely not diminished, Harper’s sound and musical compositional palette are what gives him such a unique voice in jazz today.

Cobi Narita and Billy Harper have had a longstanding kinship. Since the early days of Ms. Narita’s time in New York when she was the Executive Director of the Collective Black Artists Repertory Company where she and Mr. Harper crossed paths, she has brought his music to the attention of music lovers everywhere.

She has produced many concerts and in their latest collaboration, she continues to support the production of the video of “The Billy Harper Voices,” a lavish concert production of Harpers compositional tour de force that originally featured 60 voices when it was first recorded at St. Peters in 2012.

Narita states that she will be producing the Billy Harper Voices every other month at ZEBS (www.zebulonsoundandlight.com) in NYC until they raise enough money to complete the production and manufacture of the CD and DVD.

The singers rehearsals are ongoing, every Monday evening and the parts are challenging. One of the altos, Elizabeth Tomboulian comments that:  “…it is thrill to be a part of this experience.” This version of the voices for this concert is pared down to 18 singers and a rhythm section.

The evening features Sopranos: Eri Isaka, Caroline Santoro, Amber Reynolds, Jazzmeia Horn. Altos include: Emma Larson, Dana Hanchard, Elizabeth Tomboulian, Charnee Wade, Dace Dubrova, Ruby Greeberg, Michele Smith and Emi Makabe. Tenors: John McMahon, Paul Tafova, Lee Tomboulian and Basses: Dylan Pramuk, Klaus Mueller and Adrian Condis.   Billy Harper, Composer/Tenor Saxophone, Jack Glottman,Piano Kevin Smith, Bass and Panegiotis Kostopoulus, Drums.

Ms. Narita says: “Come and meet the singers and and say “hi” to Billy and his Trio. A light buffet supper will be served following the concert.”
