The recent article by Becca Rose states, “In a recent cell phone scam criminals who thrive off of being a scam artist have figured out an alternative way by which they can acquire their victim’s hard earned money and vital information. This new scam is called, “one ring scam,” where the victim will receive a call from another state or country and the phone will only ring once revealing that the receiver has a missed call.”
The Dudley Media Group cell phone scam report states that this type of cell phone scam is very effective, because statistics show that people have the habit to return missed phone calls even when they don’t recognize the number. “This returned phone call might end up costing the caller a lump sum starting at $20 with an extra $10 dollars per minute you’re on the call. As most of these scam calls are coming from Antigua or Barbados the long distance prices also apply,” the scammer report explains.
“These scam artists are acquiring your personal information the longer you are on the phone. They use this information to get your credit card and other financial information so they can claim it as their own,” Becca writes. The Dudley Media Group Scam report continues by stating, “Since the scam first started Peggy Penders from the Better Business Bureau has been sending out warnings to cell phone users urging them not to return missed calls from numbers they do not recognize, and from those who do not leave a message.”
The Better Business Bureau agent Peggy Penders has stated that, “Often times these calls are repeated again and again and again really trying to get you to pick up that phone.” The Dudley Media Group cell phone scam report explains that “Furthermore, Penders is adamant that cell phone users get in touch with their wireless carrier within 60 days of the initial phone call so they can dispute the charges on their bill. This is one of the only scams of its kind involving cell phones, but this certainly will not be the last.”
