Kurt Cobain was the lead singer, guitarist and song writer for the grunge rock group Nirvana, which used this form of rock to express themselves musically opposing the corporate sector in the music industry.
The band had a massive hit with “Smells Like Teen Spirit” from its second album Nevermind (1991). Following the success of Nevermind, Nirvana were labeled “the flagship band” of Generation X, and Cobain hailed as “the spokesman of a generation”.
In 2003, David Fricke of Rolling Stone ranked him the 12th greatest guitarist of all time.
He was later ranked the 73rd greatest guitarist and 45th greatest singer of all time by the same magazine, and by MTV as 7th in the “22 Greatest Voices in Music”.
In 2006, he was placed at number twenty by Hit Parader on their list of the “100 Greatest Metal Singers of All Time”.
According to author Charles R. Cross, “Cobain’s effect on music, fashion, activism and health issues has long outlasted him. He may not have been the last rock star, but he was certainly one of the most impactful, ever.
During the last years of his life, Cobain struggled with heroin addiction, illness and depression. He also had difficulty coping with his fame and public image, and the professional and lifelong personal pressures surrounding himself and his wife, musician Courtney Love.
Unfortunately there seem to be quite a few rock stars like Cobain who have had their lives ended before their time.
With his passing his music will still live on.
