Finding the best volunteer opportunities in Cambodia just became much easier with the publication of ‘UNSUNG HEROES CAMBODIA’ by Lee Anderson, Kerryan Griffin and Shawna Hartley. This not-for-profit book has identified 40 Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) doing work across all categories, in all areas of the country as the Best NGOs; “People and Projects Making a Difference”.

Using diverse criteria to select from the 3,000 or more NGOs, the book bestows honour and recognition on those who have been doing very important work to help Cambodians recover from the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge and build a future for themselves.

“When I first visited I was shocked at the difficulties of life for most Cambodians and was very motivated to help,” stated Lee Anderson, co-author. “But I was quickly overwhelmed by everyone wanting and needing help. And I certainly did not want to make things worse for these people OR to give my money to scam artists.”

Following years of research and investigation, the most important NGOs have finally been revealed. ‘UNSUNG HEROES CAMBODIA’ celebrates work being done in every area from basic human needs of shelter, food and water to health care, education, sustainable business, the environment, human rights and the arts.

Over 40 projects are featured providing an excellent background in what has been done since the borders were first opened to international visitors in 1991 – and what remains to be done.

Interested volunteers and donors can easily contact the sources to discover how they might also be able to help.

The projects range from single person start-ups to large international organizations demonstrating Best Practice Policies, Khmer involvement and Empowerment, and Volunteer Opportunities.

“The finest aspect of this book is in honoring those people who have given selflessly without any expectation of reward in order to give a hand to those in need,” stated co-author Shawna Hartley.

“Yet it also provides very valuable instruction on how to identify a ‘good’ NGO from a scam, and things every tourist needs to be aware of so that they can be part of the solution, rather than creating new problems for those in need.”

The extremely popular large format book is available at Monument Books in Cambodia, select bookstores worldwide, Amazon, and the Unsung Heroes website www.unsungheroes.net.au.

‘UNSUNG HEROES CAMBODIA’ has been embraced as a teaching tool and acquired by many school and university libraries. It is also a valuable tool for Non Governmental Organisations looking to become better NGOs and attract more volunteers and resources. Yet it remains first and foremost a book for volunteers, about volunteers. Featuring the best of the best provides inspiration, insight and motivation for others to answer the call of help from Cambodia.
