(Newswire.net — June 10, 2015) Singapore, Singapore — Singapore American School second graders presented a check for SGD $51,087.34 to Food from the Heart, a local non-profit food distribution program on June 3, 2015.

In April, Singapore American School hosted the ninth annual second grade walk-a-thon. Each year the entire second grade student body floods the track and spends one hour trying to walk, run, skip, and stride as many laps as possible. The theme for this years event was superheroes. Students, parents, and teachers came dressed as their favorite superheroes ready to help put an end to hunger in Singapore. This year the students completed over 1,000 miles and raised SGD $51,087.34.

The annual event is a fundraiser for Food from the Heart, a local non-profit voluntary food distribution program founded in 2003.

“The generous donation from SAS will go towards supporting about 82 families under our Food Goodies Bag (FGB) programme. This program’s target beneficiaries are the children in neighbourhood schools. These children are all under the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) where the government provides some form of support, mainly free text books, uniform and shoes. Lunch will also be provided for the kids in school under the FAS.

However, we believe that the family well being does play an important part in the development of the child. Thus we provide these FGB for their family so that there is harmony in the family and in turn, a proper environment for the kids.

The support from SAS will enable us to support these families with their basic essential needs as well as allowing the kids a chance to work towards a better future,” said Anson Quek, Executive Director, Food from the Heart.

Singapore American School encourages students of all ages to look beyond themselves and find ways to serve others. The annual walk-a-thon is just one of many events that the second graders participate in each year.
