(Newswire.net — July 4, 2015) Kingston 10 — In conjunction with parents and siblings of students of the basic school, a tennis court was resurfaced and created on the school grounds.

The Phillip and Christine Gore Family Foundation (PCGFF) was founded in 2002 with the main objective of helping to improve early childhood education in Jamaica. Tennis

is also big on the PCGFF’s agenda and so tennis coach Mr. Plummer had spoken with the Shady Grove Basic School to see how best they could assist there. The school and parents had decided they wanted to resurface the grounds as their Labour Day project

and so the PCGFF undertook to provide materials for the project.

With the groundwork now laid, Shady Grove Basic School can now participate in the tennis programme to their full potential. Shady Grove Basic School is one of PCGFF’s

target schools to provide crucial early childhood initiatives. Following the resurfacing of the tennis court, the school’s tennis programme is now running smoothly under the tutelage of coach Mr. Plummer. The students are reportedly doing well and have improved vastly in their technique and knowledge of the sport since the improvements to the court have been made.

The school and parents were very appreciative of the donations of materials to provide a better and safer levelled surface. Now the children have a nice surface to play on and everyone is ecstatic that the basic school kids can improve their tennis.

Shady Grove Basic School was established in 1974 and is situated on 217 Old Hope Road. Their principal Ms. Wellington has stated that the main goal of the school is to “help children reach their potential and achieve their goals whatever they may be.” With many of the children interested and active in sports, the school wishes to explode their full potential by teaching and instructing in tennis.

Principal Ms. Wellington has expressed that the school’s PTA is very helpful in the overall activities at Shady Grove Basic School. Additionally based off the school’s estimation and outside assessments, the students excel and are well prepared to move onto their respective preparatory or primary schools upon graduation.

The PCGFF continues to lay foundations for initiatives to aid with early childhood education. Apart from assisting with tennis programmes, another of their main objectives is nutrition. Nutrition plays a very important role in the early life of a child and therefore, the PCGFF believes it is a great way to impact that age group. They have so far put on workshops for nutrition by inviting school principals, teachers and chefs to learn about the basics of feeding children of the basic school age group.

After these seminars are completed, the PCGFF provides cooking and feeding utensils for school kitchens as well as assisting with any upgrades required. The PCGFF helps in improving the needs of their target basic schools and ensures they pass the expectations of the Early Childhood Commission to make the environment for children

more comfortable and suitable for learning.
