Stop, Drop, and Play Dead: What You Need To Do To Catch Your Dog in New Jersey

(Newswire.net — July 15, 2015) –This means a lot of in and out of the house, and for all the pet owners each entrance and exit is another chance for Rover to make a dash for endless walks and squirrel chasing. This a problem that is usually more common pups, but when it does happen it’s usually a bit of a headache no matter how mature the dog. So how about some helpful tips to catching Rover from the staff of Jersey City Unleashed Pet Resorts?

“If your dog is still in sight, don’t go chasing after it. After all, dogs love to be chased and you’ll end up involuntarily participating in your pet’s favorite game as your run all over the neighborhood. Some people try treats or toys (throwing a ball can be pretty effective if you dog is trained for fetch), but there are two solutions that you may not have tried.

The first of which is to play dead. Your dog is going to be watching you; he is waiting to see when you’ll start your pursuit so he can go run off some more. While he’s staring over, make a sudden fall to the floor. As many owners are already aware, dogs are tied to their owners and if something seems wrong they will pause their game to make sure their best bud is all right. So when you collapse to the floor Rover is going to do what any good friend would do. He is going to head over to inspect the situation and make sure things are all fine and probably give a few licks to the face for good measure. Just make sure you are quick when you grab him because this isn’t as effective the second time around.

The second solution is to change from being the chaser to the chasee. Once you have your dog’s attention, get low, stare, and book it to the opposite direction. I have never owned a dog that could resist a good chase, and the best part is that now you two share a common goal – to catch each other. In this case you don’t have to worry about being quick to catch your pet by the collar as much as withstanding the oncoming tackle.

If these strategies don’t work, then it might be that your dog could not care less about your presence. He or she is simply enamored by the outside world and is going to do as he pleases. Unfortunately sometimes all you can do is follow them until they tire out or they finish their walk and circle back. I would just be sure to call in to your local police department and let them know the situation because you can be sure they will be receiving numerous calls about a wild dog on the loose.”
