Pest management company Preferred Pest Control in Savannah, Ga., releases informative article on brown recluse spiders

“The Brown Recluse: Rampant Home Invader or Oft-Mistaken Scapegoat” discusses confusion between the wolf spider and the brown recluse

Pest management company Preferred Pest Control in Savannah, Ga., has just released an educational article titled “The Brown Recluse: Rampant Home Invader or Oft-Mistaken Scapegoat.” In it, the author explores the misunderstood brown recluse spider, who is often blamed for bites in regions of the country (like Savannah, Ga.) where it does not even live. The blog can be seen here

Brown recluse spiders are not a problem for Savannah, Ga. pest management companies

The author states that the brown recluse spider’s southernmost habitat is Northwest Georgia, and even there it is rare. Nevertheless, many people contribute bites to the brown recluse. The author states that there are massive amounts of false reports of brown recluse spider bites in and around Savannah, Ga, and that people will call pest management companies to treat their homes for brown recluse spiders even though Savannah is not part of their native habitat.

Wolf spiders are often mistaken for brown recluse spiders

Though wolf spiders and brown recluse spiders are not incredibly similar, they are both brown and people who have never seen a brown recluse may see the brown wolf spider and misidentify it. Wolf spiders are hairy, with black, brown and grey coloration. They can be quite large, reaching up to 35 mm in body length, with fat, stout bodies and shorter legs than a web-building spider. As mean as they look, wolf spider bites are non-lethal.

Another difference between wolf spiders and brown recluse spiders is their movement. Wolf spiders move very fast and are often seen scurrying across the floor in homes. Brown recluse spiders, on the other hand, tend to hide in dark, “reclusive” places and are rarely seen out in the open.

What does a brown recluse spider look like?

Brown recluse spiders are also known as the fiddler spider or violin spider because of the violin-shaped spot on its back. Its legs are generally light brown and its body is dark brown, yellow and greenish yellow. It is usually about the size of a quarter.
