(Newswire.net — July 24, 2015) — Lafayette, Louisiana – A showing of the romantic comedy ‘Trainwreck’ turned into a horror movie for some after a gunman opened fire about 20 minutes after the movie had started in the Grand movie theatre in Lafayette, Louisiana.
One person was killed instantly and another died later in a hospital. The shooter wounded seven others before committing suicide.
According to witnesses the man opened fire some 20 minutes into the movie Train Wreck, which was being screened at the Grand Theatre in in Lafayette. There was no arguing or any obvious causes, he just started shooting, according to a witness. Other witness said everything was happening fast, no one reacted until it ended by the shooter’s suicide.
“He wasn’t saying anything. I didn’t hear anybody screaming either,” the NBC news reported.
According to the Lafayette police department, callers reported multiple gunshoots in the theater around 7:30 pm, local time. The police arrived at the theatre securing the scene. When they entered, they found the shooter unresponsive, presumably ‘Dead On Arrival.’
The situation at the theater was “contained, ”Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft told reporters, confirming that the shooter was a white man in his 50s.
Reportedly, a bomb squad was deployed to the scene after police identified the suspect’s car and saw “suspicious objects” inside. However, a bomb disposal robot didn’t find any explosive devices inside.
“Troopers are working closely with the Lafayette Police Department as well as numerous other agencies to provide assistance and investigate the shooting,” Louisiana State Police said in a statement.
Exactly three years ago, on July 20, 2012, the shooter James Eagan Holmes opened fire at the premier of ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Rises’ in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 and wounding 70 people.
Reportedly, he set off teargas grenades, and then shot the audience with various firearms, before he was arrested in his car in front of the theatre.
Holmes admitted he is guilty of shooting, however pleaded not guilty on the grounds of insanity. Prosecutors are currently seeking the imposition of the death penalty.
