(Newswire.net — April 19, 2016) Bellingham, WA — Domain Public Market is celebrating its 10-year anniversary of being open for business on the Web.

The specialty website offers affordable domain names primarily to local businesses, small businesses and start-up companies.

Maria DeMars, one of the co-owners, said she is proud and excited to have been able to reach this symbolic milestone.

“Well, on the one hand, I’m pretty proud that we’ve been open for 10 years,” stated DeMars, “But, on the other hand, maybe all it really shows is how stubborn we are.”

“The business was started back in 2006,” continued DeMars, “My partner and I had been collecting domain names for a few years and we decided to put something together to make it easier to showcase and sell these names to other parties.”

“We started getting more serious about it after my partner purchased what most people would consider a rather poor domain for $10 and then someone offered him $3,000 for it,” she said, “While that doesn’t happen all the time, the potential return on your investment can be pretty terrific. On the other hand, the majority of low-value domain names end up being not a good liquid investment, and many times you’re stuck with names that you can’t sell at any price.”

“In the beginning, we started acquiring quite a few names that had a geographic characteristic to them. Many of these names started with the name of a city and then contained a service or trade word, such as plumbing, roofing or lawyer,” she said, “Local service companies are often interested in purchasing a domain name that specifically describes their business. Those types of names aren’t quite as popular in 2016 as they were a few years ago, but they is still quite a bit of interest in them.”

Characteristics of Good Domain Names

While some people might disagree a little on what makes a good domain name, DeMars stated that the best names generally share a few of the same characteristics. The best ones are short, easy to spell, easy to say, easy to remember and generally give an indication as to what the website is about.

“The best name for a company will depend on what kind of business they are in and what they want to accomplish,” DeMars said, “While a five-letter, made-up word might be terrific for a start-up company that has national aspirations, a small local roofing company would be better served to have a reasonably short name with the word roof in it somewhere.”

“We cater to small businesses, not to large corporations,” concluded DeMars, “We don’t have any expensive names in our portfolio. Our names range from just a few hundred dollars up to $20,000. The bulk of our business is working with local service businesses and getting them a good name for under a thousand bucks.”

DeMars mentioned that her website is open to hearing from anyone who is looking to buy a low cost domain name for their business or who is interested in getting rid of a domain they no longer want to pay renewal fees on.
