Curcumin May Be Helpful Versus Using Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines in Protecting Infants

(Newswire.net — March 10, 2017) Las Vegas, NV — Infants are by nature fragile, and they are easily susceptible to a wide range of diseases. This is why they are given some vaccines such as the pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) to reduce the risk of certain ailments.

However, there is a natural alternative called curcumin that is believed to be helpful versus using pneumococcal conjugate vaccines in protecting infants.

While there hasn’t been any evidence that proves the potential effectiveness of this vaccine to prevent diseases, the medical community as well as public health agencies impose it. Children between 2 to 12 months should be given up to four shots of PCV.

In a new research, it was found that curcumin has the potential to outperform PCV by providing possible long-term protection against potentially fatal lung damage in infants.

A bacterial infection called pneumococcal bacteria is most common in children. It is also a prevalent cause of death in adults. Infection typically originates in the throat or nose and it can persist for weeks or months.

The Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed) researchers conducted a study using disease models. They found that curcumin may be able to provide long-term protection against damage due to inadequate function of the lungs.

The American Journal of Physiology, Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology, also published a study online. This study reveals that curcumin may be able to offer protection against bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BDP).

BDP is characterized by inflammation and scarring. Curcumin may also be able to fight hyperoxia, which takes place when high levels of oxygen penetrate the body through the lungs.

According to Virender K. Rehan, MD, LA BioMed, who spearheaded and authored the research, the study was the first to discover the possible long-term benefits of curcumin in protecting lung function in infants.

One of the reasons why curcumin may potentially outperform the vaccine is that it doesn’t cause side effects. The pneumococcal vaccine has been associated with adverse effects such as swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, dermatitis, edema, dyspnea, acute toxicity, and even death.

Dr. Rehan also added that the ingredients contained in curcumin are potentially responsible for its promising therapeutic values. Some of these substances are believed to contain antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral, antibiotic, and anti-carcinogenic properties.

Turmeric powder can be an excellent kitchen ingredient, and it can be added to a wide range of dishes and beverages. Individuals who want to take advantage of the potential health benefits of curcumin may also use supplements. Supplements are popularized by the high levels of curcumin they contain.
