(Newswire.net — April 25, 2017) Orlando, FL — Arthritis causes pain, inflammation, and other disabling symptoms. There are many arthritis sufferers who live a reduced quality of life due to the condition. This is why it is not surprising that sufferers are easily susceptible to certain mental health risks.

Rheumatologists reveal the potential link between arthritis inflammation and depression. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is very prevalent, and those who suffer from it are thought to face more physical and mental challenges.

Suicide takes the lives of thousands of people worldwide even without catching the attention of the media. Depression, if not treated, can eventually lead to the risk of suicide.

According to researchers, RA sufferers are found to be two to four times more susceptible to suffering from depression than those who do not have the disease. RA causes inflammation throughout the body, and this has led some researchers to wonder if it triggers depression.

Mary Margaretten, MD, a rheumatologist from the University of California San Francisco, states that pain and disability are traditionally believed to be contributory factors in the development of depression linked with rheumatoid arthritis. It is also suggested that inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis highly contributes to the occurrence or development of depression.

In the report presented by The International Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, it was revealed that RA sufferers are more prone to inflammation-related cardiovascular diseases. The report was co-authored by Dr. Margaretten.

A team of researchers from the Jon Hopkins University submitted another report that found that major depression suffered by male participants was closely associated with the increased C-reactive protein levels. CRP is a popular marker of inflammation. Many scientists even think it is an ideal subject of the study.

Today, there are many rheumatoid arthritis sufferers who resort to the use of pain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medications are believed to ease pain, reduce inflammation, and improve the mobility of sufferers. While these medications may be helpful, their use has been linked with the development of side effects.

However, curcumin is considered to be a safer alternative to these medications. Curcumin is a phytochemical found in turmeric, which is an ancient spice. Curcumin may have the potential to safely ease pain and inflammation, and thus, possibly reducing the risk of depression among RA sufferers.
