(Newswire.net — May 2, 2017) West Palm Beach, FLORIDA — Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors are recalling specific lines of cars and SUVs due to the potential for engine stalling and failure, increasing the risk of vehicular crash.

Over 1.4 million cars in the United States, Canada, and South Korea are affected by the recall, including Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUVs from 2013 through 2014, Hyundai Sonata midsize cars from 2013 through 2014, Kia Optima midsize cars from 2011 through 2014, Kia Sportage SUVs from 2011 through 2013 and Kia Sorento SUVs from 2012 through 2014.

Additionally, in South Korea, Hyundai’s Grandeur and Sonata sedans as well as Kia’s K5, K7 and Sportage with engines produced from 2009 to 2013, have also been recalled.

The vehicles are being recalled due to machining errors during the manufacturing process which can leave excess debris, affecting the function of the engine. Residual debris may cause reduction of oil flow to connecting rod bearings, thereby increasing temperatures and causing premature wear and failure of the bearings. Such conditions could lead the vehicle’s engine to seize, increasing risk of crash.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) posted the recall on their website on March 31, 2017. To date, there have been no reports of injury or crashes related to this recall.

Hyundai has reported drivers may hear a knocking sound in the engine which increases in frequency with acceleration of speed or may see their engine light come on. All owners are encouraged to contact their dealer if they notice these or any other issues occurring.

The recall is expected to begin May 19, 2017. The company will notify all registered owners and dealers will inspect and replace the engine short, if necessary, free of charge. For more information, owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 162.

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors are headquartered in South Korea. Together they comprise the Hyundai Motor Group – the world’s fifth largest automaker.
