Turmeric May Be Nature’s Safe Alternative to NSAIDs

(Newswire.net — July 25, 2017) Orlando, FL — Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used by individuals with arthritis. While these medications may be helpful, they may also cause side effects. This has led many consumers to turn to the use of safer alternatives, such as turmeric.

Turmeric may be nature’s safe alternative to NSAIDs. This spice contains a phytochemical called curcumin, which has long been suspected to be the main source of many of turmeric’s potential benefits.

“Curcumin is thought to have powerful anti-inflammatory effects,” said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott.

In addition to its potential anti-inflammatory agents, it is also believed to contain antibacterial, antioxidant, antiseptic, antiviral, anti-carcinogenic, and antibiotic properties.

It is widely believed that curcumin’s possible anti-inflammatory agents could aid in the reduction of irritation to the tissues. This is often characterized by redness, swelling, pain, and heat, which are particularly helpful for individuals with osteoarthritis.

This arthritic condition is considered a degenerative joint disease. Individuals who suffer from it typically experience symptoms, such as inflammation, pain, stiffness, and swelling, which can be extremely debilitating.

There are many osteoarthritis sufferers who turn to the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to achieve pain relief and increased mobility. While the use of these medications is considered to be generally helpful, it is also undeniable that the side effects they may cause may be detrimental to health.

Prolonged or frequent use of these medications has been linked with serious side effects, such as gastrointestinal problems, cardiovascular disease, and liver damage.

Individuals who take these medications are even found to be three times more at risk of developing serious gastrointestinal adverse effects than those who don’t take these pharmaceutical drugs.

According to statistics, there are approximately 1.2% of individuals with osteoarthritis taking NSAIDs who are admitted to the hospital for upper GI problems every year of exposure.

In one study involving participants who took NSAIDs, it was found that more than half of them suffered from a life-threatening complication, which was the first sign of ulcers.

According to researchers, these pharmaceutical drugs suppress the production of prostacyclin, which is essential in the dilation of blood vessels as well as in the inhibition of clotting.

Earlier studies also reveal that mice, which were genetically engineered to be incapable of properly using prostacyclin, were at an increased risk of clotting disorders.

Turmeric has been used for thousands of years for kitchen and medicinal purposes. This spice is widely popular nowadays, and is usually consumed through curcumin supplementation.

Supplements are believed to possess abundant levels of curcumin’s properties. Some of the most notable curcumin supplements in the market contain black pepper extract, which is considered to be a bioavailability-enhancing ingredient.
