(Newswire.net — October 4, 2017) Orlando, FL — It has long been believed that being overweight or fat could lead to a series of undesirable health consequences. However, not many people know how it can have significant effects to the joints.

Fat cells could potentially jeopardize the health of the joints. The presence of fat is actually the cause of anxiety and depression for many people around the world. However, it actually does more than just hang around in inconvenient and visible places.

According to Farish Guilak, PhD, a professor of orthopedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center at Durham, N.C. obesity is the top preventable risk factor for osteoarthritis. However, it has not been a subject of many studies due to the fact that everyone dismissed it as overloading joints.

The researchers wonder whether it is only obesity that could produce joint destruction. It is not just athletes, but also those who are obese that are more susceptible to having osteoarthritis in their wrists, hands, and fingers. The hands can sometimes bear loads, such as when carrying a heavy flower pot.

For overweight individuals or those who are considered to be obese, carrying excessive pounds of fat could produce hidden dangers that many researchers, such as Guilak, are starting to understand.

Fat is a dwelling of millions of fat cells, which are otherwise known as adipocytes. These fat cells work against the body for the purpose of destroying the joints. This process is believed to happen due to the misguided responses to high glucose levels as well as cytokine exposure.

As a reaction to this exposure, adipocytes churn out high levels of adipokines, which are its own immune proteins.

Over the years, obesity leads to low-level chronic inflammation. It is worth remembering that inflammation is actually not harmful, when it is short-lived and managed. However, when it becomes chronic, it is believed to cause a variety of undesirable health consequences.

Robert Mooney, PhD, says that the soft drum-beat of immune proteins can damage the joints and other tissues. He said this is insidious due to the fact that it’s continuous.

Mooney is a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Rochester in New York.

When fat cells successfully damage the joints, it could lead to the development of arthritis. It is imperative to maintain a healthy weight to ward off conditions, such as arthritis.

It could also be helpful to strengthen joint health, and one way to do it is to use glucosamine supplements. Glucosamine is thought to be one of the best joint health enhancing supplements nowadays.
