(Newswire.net — October 20, 2017) — When it comes to clothing, people have their own preferences with regards to the style that they prefer. This not only applies to the appearance of the garments but also the way in which the garment is secured. Some people prefer clothes that are elasticated while others like clothing with buttons. There are also those that prefer clothing with zippers, which are commonly used on dresses, jeans, trousers, and formal wear. Take jeans for example.  When it comes to jeans button vs jeans zipper, many prefer the latter for a variety of reasons.

There are various different types of zippers available. These zippers provide a great way of fastening and securing the clothing, and they have been used for many decades. Known as a ‘clothing closure’, the zipper was patented by Elias Howe in 1851. However, the zipper as we know it today was actually invented by Gideon Sundback in 1913.

What are the good and bad points of zippers?

There are both pros and cons to consider when it comes to zippers. This is something to take into consideration if you are purchasing new clothing and can’t decide whether to go for a zipper design or an alternative. Some of the good and bad points of zippers include:

Pros

  • Versatility: Zippers are very versatile and can be used on all sorts of garments, from tops and dresses through to trousers, jeans, footwear and outwear. This has helped to make it a very popular option amongst both clothing designers and consumers.
  • Appearance: Using a zipper can improve the appearance of your clothing because the zipper can easily be hidden. If you have an invisible zipper design, this is especially easy, which means that there is nothing to mar the appearance of your garment.
  • Secure: A zipper is a great way to ensure that your clothing stays securely in place. With fastening options such as buttons, there is always a risk that one will come undone or come off altogether. However, the zipper should stay in place and help to keep your clothing in exactly the position it should be.
  • Durability: Another key benefit of zippers is that they are very durable. Unlike buttons, they are not liable to drop off or pop unexpectedly. They also won’t leave gaping spaces and gaps, which you can sometimes get between buttons.

Cons

  • Getting stuck: One issue that many people have with zippers is that they can get stuck as a result of getting caught up with the material of the garment. This then means trying to work the zipper loose so that you can do it up or get it down. If you exert too much pressure, this could end up breaking the zipper altogether and damaging the material of the garment.
  • Needing assistance: If you have a zipper on the back of a garment such as a dress, it can be difficult to get it done up yourself unless you are very flexible. This means that you may need assistance to get the zipper done up or undone when getting dressed/undressed. If there is nobody around to help, this could cause an issue.

As you can see, the pros definitely outweigh the cons when it comes to zippers on clothing. This is why zippers are so commonly used on a wide range of clothing, and will continue to remain popular for the foreseeable future.
