Hazards of Mouth Breathing

(Newswire.net — December 25, 2017) Cheyenne, Wyoming — Running a race or sprinting from the other room to turn off a running tap in time can both leave you breathless, depending on your physical fitness. Either way, we’ve all experienced that rush, squeeze or panting which typically precedes us breathing through our mouth. However, some people unconsciously breathe through their mouth continuously, unwittingly with great risk to their health.

Mouth breathing increases the volume of oxygen the lungs receive at a faster rate than the nose could ever supply but it comes at a cost. The mouth has no mechanism in place to filter the air, nothing negotiating what enters deeper into the body from what should be expelled. The nasal passage is lined with fine hairs and mucus to facilitate proper breathing and naturally separate undesirable particles such as dust, lint and the like.

Also, stress makes you breathe faster and promotes sighing, so to counteract or release stress, you need to do the opposite — breathe slower, softer and make your breathing more regular through the nose. Ideally, your breathing should be so light, soft, and gentle that it’s essentially zephyr flowing through your nostrils.

“According to the late Dr. Maurice Cottle, who founded the American Rhinologic Society in 1954, your nose performs at least 30 functions, all of which are important supplements to the roles played by the lungs, heart, and other organs,” informs Joseph Mercola, an internationally recognized medical professional. “Part of the benefits of nose breathing is related to the fact that there is nitric oxide in your nose, and when you breathe gently and slowly through your nose, you carry a small amount of this beneficial gas into your lungs. Nitric oxide not only helps maintain homeostasis, or balance, within your body, it also helps to open your airways (bronchodilation), open your blood vessels (vasodilation) and has antibacterial properties that help neutralize germs and bacteria.”

Breathing through the mouth bypasses an essential step thereby it deprives the body of advantageous gaseous compounds. Only the nose is able to deliver to your lungs the necessary nitric oxide in the appropriate trace volumes as nose breathing also helps normalize your breathing volume. This is important because when you chronically overbreathe, the heavier breathing volume that’s coming into your lungs can cause a disturbance of blood gasses, including the loss of carbon dioxide (CO2).

In cases of nose breathing disturbances, a nasal strip is able to help relieve some of the pressure and oxygen imbalance. The HealthyWiser™ Breathe-IN™ nasal strips comfortably expand the nasal passage to facilitate proper air flow to the lungs.
