The United States House of Representatives has voted on the second impeachment of President Donald Trump. Representatives of both Democrats and Republicans voted together on Wednesday to impeach president Trump a second time. The vote came after hours of debate with members of the National Guard present inside and in front of the Capitol to ensure the safety of the proceedings.
Ten Republicans voted alongside Democrats for the impeachment rendering the final tally 232-197. Trump is now the first president in the history of the United States to be impeached twice. He will now face trial in the Senate, where, if found guilty, Trump will be barred from holding office again.
Among the ten Republicans who voted for impeachment are Representatives Liz Cheney and Peter Meijer. Representative Meijer is now asking his colleagues to “tell their supporters the truth.” Representative Cheney said on Tuesday evening that she would be voting to impeach due to the president’s role in the “death and destruction in the most sacred space in our Republic.”
Nancy Pelosi, Speaker for the House of Representatives, addressed reporters moments before signing the article of impeachment “Today, in a bipartisan way the House demonstrated that no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States,” and said “Donald Trump is a clear and present danger to our country.”
Joe Biden is set to be inaugurated on 20 January, meaning that Trump will be able to spend the remainder of his term in office, since the Senate will not be able to reconvene in a week’s time. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he believes that an orderly transfer of power should happen before the trial takes place.
The FBI is warning that multiple protests are being planned in the days leading to the inauguration of president-elect Joe Biden. “They have warned that if Congress attempts to remove POTUS via the 25th Amendment, a huge uprising will occur,” read an official bulletin.
They have also received a tip that capitals of all 50 states could be facing armed protests. James Conway, former FBI agent, said “It’s critical for the FBI and law enforcement community to get out in front of this.”
