With just over a week to go until Summerslam 2019 kicks off, we take a trip down the memory lane to relive five of the all-time best Summerslam moments in WWE history.
#5 Paul Bearer Betrays the Undertaker
The Undertaker and his best buddy/ uncle/half father Paul Bearer wreaked havoc in the WWE in their initial years. Such was their fear that when Paul turned on the Undertaker in ‘96 to team up with the deranged Mankind at Summerslam, everyone was stunned.
Believed to be Undertaker’s source of power, Paul surprised everyone by hitting Undertaker with the ‘Urn’ and awarded it to his new ally Mankind. Undertaker and Mankind would then go on to become arch-nemesis and fought with each other on various occasions over the years.
#4 Triple H and Shawn Michaels’ infamous street fight of ‘02
The Summerslam of 2002 became one of the most iconic ones when Triple H and Shawn Michaels almost killed each other in an infamous street fight. Making a return to the WWE after a four-year hiatus, Michaels had his best friend betray him and the two settled their beef in a classic encounter.
After a brutal no holds barred match which Michaels won on pinfall, Triple H attacked his best friend with a sledgehammer in the same region which initially forced Michaels to retire. What followed then remains one of the most brutal cold-blooded scenes in the WWE as Triple H left the ring demented, with Michaels lying unconscious. There was a sense of sadness as these two feuded that night, sending chills down the spine of most of the WWE universe.
#3 Shane Mcmahon falls from 40 feet high entrance prop at Summerslam 2000
Shane McMahon may have been born with a silver spoon, but he has done his fair share of crazy antics and one of the most memorable ones came at the Summerslam 2000. Shane agreed to a hardcore match against ‘The Lethal Weapon’ Steve Blackman and in the process did something which nobody saw coming.
The dude literally fell from the top of a 40 feet column and well, for a guy better known for his management rather than fighting, there was no way back from that fall. The crowd literally were not prepared for something like this. Not that they complained though.
#2 Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth Get Married at Summerslam ‘91
There will never be another couple as iconic as the Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth. Her grace and his aura were loved and adored by the WWE universe, and when they decided to marry each other, on-screen at Summerslam ‘91, it was bound to be a moment of a lifetime.
Most WWE storylines are scripted but this one went beyond acting. The tears and emotions were real, and imagine marrying someone in front of a crowd of thousands screaming at the top of their lungs. This moment well and truly remains as one of the most memorable instances of Summerslam history.
#1 Summerslam goes global as British Bulldog ousts Bret Hart at Wembley in ‘92
Bret Hart and British Bulldog delivered an all-time classic when they took to the ring in front of 80,355 people which was the first Summerslam to be held outside the US. These two real-life brother-in-laws collided in a career-defining match for the prestigious WWF Intercontinental Championship at Summerslam 1992.
It was a test of endurance, a treat to the eyes, and as the match entered its climax, something unexpected happened. Bret Hart saw his Sunset Flip reversed as the Bulldog registered a pinfall victory. An elated 80 thousand off crowd applauded the two superstars who shook the hands of each other after delivering arguably one of the best performances of their lives.
