(Newswire.net — February 7, 2021) — There are countless foster care families across the country. It’s simply amazing when people open their homes and hearts to children in need. Being a foster parent requires compassion and often involves sacrifices that are made without hesitation. If you are someone that wants to support foster families in some way or another, the five tips below will guide you on how to make that happen. You are bound to be an encouragement along the way.

1. Join in on Celebrations

There are many events throughout a person’s life that warrant a celebration. Birthdays and graduations are two great opportunities for celebration in every family. Sometimes a small gift to celebrate a foster child’s birthday will make a big difference in how they feel during a difficult time. It’s something that can be encouraging, especially to a foster child that may not be accustomed to receiving gifts. Foster children often experience very painful situations. That’s one reason why taking the time to celebrate them can be very encouraging. You don’t have to wait until a birthday or graduation because joining a family is also a great occasion to celebrate.

2. Provide a Meal

There is a lot to manage in foster families. It’s a world where children are dealing with unique challenges. Their lives have been disrupted and they’re in a new environment. Foster parents often have busy schedules because of added responsibilities like court dates, therapy visits, caseworker meetings, new school enrollment and so much more. This is all on top of what may have already been a busy life. Providing a meal to a foster family will likely be a welcomed surprise. This can be something that you prepare or a meal that’s ordered online. Either way, your thoughtfulness will be appreciated.

3. Offer Respite

Respite is when temporary relief is given to someone. There are a lot of reasons why a person might need respite, whether or not they have foster children. Providing it can be great for foster families because it facilitates a break that they might not otherwise receive. Certain guidelines must be followed when providing respite to foster care families, such as learning CPR and completing a background check. These requirements are specific to your state or county. Some states even offer licensing for individuals desiring to provide respite. Be sure to follow the right protocols if this is something that you desire to provide a foster family.

4. Give Entertainment Passes

Going to the movies, the zoo or an amusement park is almost a rite of passage. These are fun and sometimes educational outings that can be quite memorable. Family outings are a great way to make memories that will last a lifetime. Since entertainment passes are not always cheap, providing them to a foster family will be very much appreciated. While there have been restrictions and limited hours recently for some entertainment venues, that won’t always be the case.

5. Prepare Healthy Snacks

Growing children eat often. Sometimes they eat a lot of food all day long. A great way to support a foster family is by providing them with healthy snacks. This can include fruit, crackers, granola bars and anything else that would contribute to the health and wellness of children. It’s also a good idea to provide a few extra items that the foster parents will enjoy.

These are all great ways to provide encouragement and support to a foster family. It’s good to find out what a particular family wants or needs if possible. Always remember that no support is too small because it’s the thought that counts.
