(Newswire.net — January 23, 2019) — You’re seated in your living room, and suddenly, you’re hit by a strange foul smell. It highly likely that it’s coming from your carpet, but the big question is: how do you get rid of the bad odor? You can grab your laptop and order a bottle of freshener or make one for yourself, with ingredients you probably already have at your home. Rather than spending money on a carpet cleaner that will work in the same way as a cheaper, more convenient alternative, you can make your own. Making a homemade carpet cleaner is easy and inexpensive. If you don’t have the ingredients, they’re usually readily available at your local grocery store. Here’s how you can make a homemade carpet freshener with cinnamon.
How to Make Your Own Homemade Carpet Freshener With Cinnamon
Ingredients
-
½ cup baking soda
-
½ cup borax
-
One teaspoon ground cinnamon or 30 drops essential oils
Directions
-
Start by mixing the baking powder and borax into a plastic bowl or glass.
-
Add a teaspoon of cinnamon for scent. If you don’t have cinnamon, you can add about 30 drops of essential oil of your choice or a teaspoon of ground cloves.
-
If you opt for essential oils, consider allowing the ingredients to sit overnight so the oils can permeate the baking soda.
-
Stir the mixture until it’s free of lumps.
-
Transfer the powder into an empty jar with a dispenser top or shaker container. Those make it easier to sprinkle the powder around the house. Jars intended for powdered sugar will also work perfectly or take a mason jar and use a cardstock, puncture a few holes in it and use it to replace the inside circle for the lid.
-
Sprinkle the powder onto your carpet and let it absorb the odors for about 15 to 20 minutes before vacuuming thoroughly.
You can also use the freshener in your car as well. Sprinkle it on the chairs, upholstery and carpet before you vacuum.
If you happen to have a pair of stinky shoes in the closet, sprinkle the freshener inside the shoes too, and it will absorb any moisture and neutralize the odor. Once you’ve given the freshener sufficient time to work its magic, tip the shoes over so the excess falls onto the carpet before your vacuum it all up.
Tips
-
If you or someone in your house is sensitive to smells, carpet pros at Cosmopolitan Carpet recommends to use plain baking powder only as it can effectively absorb odors on its own.
-
If you have a lighter colored carpet, don’t use cloves or cinnamon as they may cause discoloration. Use cinnamon or clove essential oil instead as they can still incorporate the smell into the powder without the risk of discoloration.
-
Be sure to check with the manufacturer of your vacuum cleaner to ensure baking soda won’t harm your machine or clog the filters.
Bottom Line
Strange smells coming from your carpet can be embarrassing, especially if you have guests over. Whenever you smell something odd, it’s doesn’t necessarily mean your house is messy or dirty. Sometimes a spillage you didn’t spot may be the cause of that strange odor. With a homemade carpet freshener with cinnamon, you can have your home smelling clean, fresh and inviting in no time.
