(Newswire.net — November 3, 2019) — It has been Boris Johnson’s desire to hold a general election for some time, and after many refusals, opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has finally agreed to hold a general election on the 12th of December.
Boris Johnson wants to hold the election so that he will receive more votes and therefore strengthen his hand when it comes to making important decisions about Brexit. With more Conservative MP’s, Johnson is more likely to be able to pass his version of a Brexit deal.
In the early days since the announcement of an election, opinion polls are already very much in favour of the Conservative party. At this moment in time, polls state that the Conservatives currently hold a 16-point lead ahead of everyone else. They are currently predicted to get 42% of the vote.
With early polls that show a huge lead for the Conservative party, it is easy to see why many Labour party members were completely against the idea of an election.
Next in line is Labour, which the opinion polls show them to recieve 26% of the vote. Lib Dems are in line to obtain 16% of the vote, and all other minor parties are predicted to recieve a small about of the votes.
However, it would be reductive to state that Labour have no chance in the upcoming elections. Many polling trends are also showing that its going to be unlikely that either the Conservatives or the Labour party will win a majority.
If this is to happen, it is Labour, not the Conservatives, who will be in a better position to deal with other parties in the house of commons. For example, Jeremy Corbyn could strike a deal with either the SNP or the Liberal Democrats, which would allow him to become the next prime minister.
If the Conservatives do not win a majority, they will have to make a deal with the Brexit party, a move that could lose Boris Johnson a lot of credibility.
It remains to be seen what will happen in this historic general election, but it is important not to dismiss Labour.
