(Newswire.net — August 12, 2020) Winnetka, IL — Stress has long been identified to be detrimental to health for decades. In a study, it has been shown to have negative effects on memory.
This research has shown that women who struggle from stressful situations in middle age are linked with greater memory loss later in life. However, it is worth noting that such an association hasn’t been found in men.
The findings of this research were published in International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.
The investigators assessed over 900 adults in the early 1990s, particularly between 1993 and 1996. The evaluation was also carried out once between 2003 and 2004. It is worth noting that the average age of the participants was 47 at their third visit in the 1990s.
At that particular visit, the researchers found that around 47 percent of men and 50 percent of women reported having at least one stressful event during the past year. That either involved a marriage, divorce, job loss, severe injury or sickness, childbirth, death of a loved one, a child moving out or retirement.
The investigators tested the mental skills of the subjects at the third and fourth visits. For the purpose of gauging their memory, they were required to remember 20 words spoken aloud immediately after hearing them and again 20 minutes later.
Further at the third visit, they remembered an average of eight words immediately and six words later. At the fourth visit, the numbers were seven and six, respectively.
At the fourth visit, it has been found there was a decline in word memory by an average of one word — twice the level of others among women who’d had at least one stressful midlife event.
The findings of the research have led scientists to conclude that stress hormones have different effects in the brain of women and men. They also noted that women tend to be at a heightened risk of Alzheimer’s disease than men.
Stress, especially chronic, has undesirable effects on health. This is why experts have been looking into the remedies that could be helpful in fighting it.
