A Published Study Warns Poor Sleep Leads to Depression in Adolescents

(Newswire.net — January 12, 2023) Orlando, FL — Health authorities have long warned against the lifestyle factors like sleep deprivation that are associated with mental health.

A study has particularly shown that in males and females, chronic sleep disruption during adolescence can result in depression. Further, it also alters stress reactivity in females.

This research spearheaded by University of Ottawa scientists was published in the journal Behavioral Brain Research.

Individuals diagnosed with depression experience several symptoms including general malaise, reduced libido, sleep disruptions, and suicidal tendencies in severe cases,” said senior author Nafissa Ismail.

Ismail is an Associate Professor at the Ottawa School of Psychology and a University Research Chair in Stress and Mental Health.

It is worth noting that twice as many females as males have a depression diagnosis currently. It is in early adolescence that adults with depression first experience depressive symptoms. 

Experts theorize that depression in adolescents originates from overexposure to stress. Further, the differences between the depression rates in males and females are attributed to an increased vulnerability to chronic stress in females. 

“Our results showed that adolescent male and female mice both displayed significantly greater depressive behavior after only 7 days of sleep delays while adult male and female mice did not show depressive behavior under similar conditions.”

Significant sleep delays during adolescence may increase the odds of depression onset in both males and females. Further, a delay in sleep may also sensitize adolescent females to other stressors and increase their risk of mood disorder development.
