A Study Warns a Western Diet Is Linked With Skin Inflammation

(Newswire.net — March 14, 2022) Orlando, FL — More and more experts warn against chronic inflammation, which is linked with the increased odds of diseases. It is worth keeping in mind that inflammation levels in the body increase when following an unhealthy diet.

A study was carried out by UC Davis Health researchers and published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

In this study, it has been found that a Western diet loaded with sugar and fat may increase the odds of inflammatory skin diseases like psoriasis.

The researchers have particularly revealed that it is dietary components and not obesity itself that leads to skin inflammation and the onset of psoriasis. This common and chronic skin disease triggers the skin cells to form scales and red patches, which can be itchy and painful.

Previous research studies have shown that obesity may increase the odds of or worsen psoriasis.

It is important to keep in mind that the Western diet has long been associated with the increased prevalence of obesity around the globe. The Western diet usually involves a high dietary intake of sucrose and saturated fats and reduced fiber intake.

“In our study, we found that short-term exposure to Western diet is able to induce psoriasis before the significant body weight gain,” said Sam T. Hwang.

Hwang is professor and chair of dermatology at UC Davis and senior author of the study.

Hwang and colleagues have found that a diet with high sugar and high fat was needed in inducing observable skin inflammation. In a matter of only four weeks, the mouse subjects on a Western diet had significantly increased ear swelling as well as visible dermatitis than mice fed a controlled diet and those on a high-fat diet alone.

“Eating an unhealthy diet does not affect your waistline alone, but your skin immunity too,” said Zhenrui Shi.

She is visiting assistant researcher in the UC Davis Department of Dermatology and the lead author of the study.

While there are pro-inflammatory foods, it is also worth noting that there is a wide selection of food items that are found to combat inflammation. This is due to the nutrients they contain, such as B vitamins.

In some studies, it has been found that B vitamins have anti-inflammatory benefits. Today, these nutrients are obtained widely through the use of formulas like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex.

It is also worth keeping in mind that B vitamins are helpful for skin health, appearance, and protection.

It contains Choline, Pantothenic acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Niacin, Riboflavin, Thiamin, and vitamin B6 (amazon.com/dp/B07414752B).
