(newswire.net–July 22nd,2013)Brisbane,Qld–An outstanding final round for Phil Mickelson in the British Open Golf Championship has secured him another title to add to his belt. At the age of 43 years, the American left hander birdied four of his final six holes to win the British Open.

Mickelson told Tom Rinaldi of ESPN: “I am playing some of the best golf of my life. Today was one of the best rounds I’ve ever played.” Mickelson seems to be getting better with age, like a fine Red wine.

Mickelson started his day 5 shots off the leader before powering ahead. Phil finished up 5 under par for his final round and 3 under for the British Open Championship.

When Mickelson was asked by Rinaldi to compare the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion to Muirfield, Mickelson replied: “I have quite different feelings and emotions now, then I did just a month ago, this is just an incredible high. I didn’t know in my career if I would ever develop the game as a complete player to win this championship, growing up not ever playing it. I can’t explain the feeling of satisfaction and fulfilment to win this tournament. Today’s round will be one of the most memorable rounds of golf I’ve ever played.”

Mickelson was ecstatic after sinking a 10 foot birdie putt on the 18th. This all but guaranteed Mickelson would have his name etched into history and onto the Claret Jug. “I putted so good” Mickelson stated (Via The Associate Press)

Lee Westwood at this stage was the only other competitor on course that had any hope of matching Mickelson. But as history will show, that didn’t happen. Lee Westwood Bogey the 16th and recorded par on the 17th and 18th.

Lee Westwood held a 2 shot lead over Tiger Woods in the final round, and also the same lead over Hunter Mahan. This win for the left handed Mickelson was worth £945,000 British Pounds and gives the American his fifth Major Title. All he needs now is a win in the US open to give him a personal Grand Slam achievement.

A fantastic achievement for Phil Mickelson and as the statisticians have already pointed out, Phil is only the 3rd player in their 40’s to claim the Claret Jug in its existence.
