Can You Tell Back Pain from Prostate Cancer?

(Newswire.net — October 7, 2014) Darien, CT — As a Chiropractor I see hundreds of cases of low back pain a year. Let me confess that after 25 years of practice I can not tell between back pain and back pain related to prostate cancer. However I do know when to recommend that a male patient get his prostate screened. When he is 45 years old and sooner if there is a family history of prostate cancer, especially when they have a history of low back pain.

Chiropractors treat bad backs. Pain coming from a bad back can come from many different nerves from the back. Some of the hot spots for low back pain pain arise from the sacral nerve plexus. The prostate galnd receives nerve innervation from the sacral nerve plexus as well. Pain is pain so what do you do to protect the patient best when they are males above 40 and they present with low back pain? A solid exam with follow up studies like x-ray or MRI imaging. But good sense dictates that the patient start seeing a urologist on a regular basis to have his prostate screened.

Ths standard PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen test has come under fire due to lack of specificity. There are some false postives leading to unneeded surgeries and false negaitive results leading to under treatment. Early detection is the key to better treatment and control of prostrate cancer. but you need reliable test results to act properly.

A new prostate screening test known as PCA-3 is slowly gaining acceptance. If you are concerned about prostate cancer because of an elevated PSA or are feeling insecure about a previously performed (negative) biopsy, the PCA3 urine test can provide additional information. This information can aid you and your doctor to decide whether another biopsy is really needed. The test is used as an additional test and is thought to be more discriminative than the PSA alone. This gene based test diagnoses the presence of cancerous cells only within the prostate gland. The test is a urine test done after digital rectal examination.

So I may not know exactly where your back pain is coming from but rest assured that I will make sure we find out.
