Cancer.im a social network founded on the principles of helping cancer patients increase their quality of life and to take back control.  Is proud to endorse and support Glenna Hecht, one of Cancer.im own cancer patient advocates, for the position of national spokesperson for Susan G Komen for the Cure.

“Glenna’s expertise, passion and selfless support are directly credited with the publishing of the Robert Ryan Cancer Protocol, which serves as the engine behind www.cancer.im “ stated  Dr. Kevin Buckman, founder of the Silicon Valley Cancer Foundation, co-founder of Cancer.im and  contributor to the Robert Ryan Cancer Protocol.

“The Susan G Komen Foundation has a special place in my heart, in fact one of  www.cancer.im founding principles, is that cancer patients who have an active support network outlive cancer patients who do not, was adopted from medical studies  funded directly  by Susan G Komen research” stated Chris Ryan co-founder  of Cancer.im and  contributor to the Robert Ryan Cancer Protocol.

Glenna has participated in three 3 Day Susan G Komen walks and has coached many women about the benefits of trailing, corn starch and camping.

“I decided to walk because of my own experience. One day while I was in Chicago, I felt a bump.  I knew something wasn’t right and the next day I called my doctor. We went through all tests, and thankfully all was well.  The doctor mentioned that he would have never found the bump and from that day forward, I became a walking poster child for self exams. I have been given a huge gift and that I needed to step up and do something extraordinary, thus decided to participate in the 60 mile walk.  I was determined to make it through all 3 days and even learned how to build my tent!”  Stated Glenna Hecht

About Susan G Komen for the Cure

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization has invested almost 1.5 billion dollars in the fight against breast cancer since its inception as The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 1982. Nancy Goodman Brinker founded the organization in honor of her sister, Susan Goodman Komen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 33. The organization, which has adopted a pink ribbon as it symbol, is dedicated to eradicating breast cancer and ending the suffering that it brings to women.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure currently promotes universal screenings for breast cancer, and also encourages women to administer frequent breast self-examinations. The philosophy behind this screening-intensive approach, which has been criticized for leading to overly-aggressive treatments in some cases, is that frequent screening leads to early detection, and early detection saves lives.

In order to raise money for its cause, Susan G. Komen for the Cure organizes several annual events, some of which have become global in scale. The Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure is an event in which 5k run/walk races are organized around the world, and the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure is a 60-mile walk that occurs over 3 days. The organization also holds an annual Marathon for the Cure.

In addition to these annual events, Susan G. Komen for the Cure also sponsors ongoing educational and awareness fundraising initiatives like Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure and Susan G. Komen Bowl for the Cure. These fundraisers, combined with extensive corporate partnerships, have enabled the foundation to invest more than 180 million dollars in the form of breast cancer research grants. Some of the organization’s most significant corporate partners include Yoplait, General Mills, Ford, Frito Lay and Bank of America.

According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the organization has contributed to some very significant victories in breast cancer prevention and treatment. The organization’s website states that the percentage of women over 40 who receive routine mammograms has increased by 45 percent since Komen was founded in 1982. Not only that, but it also points out that the number of women who survive for five years after being diagnosed with breast cancer is 98 percent, compared with 74 percent in 1982. This statistic suggests that detection is happening earlier and treatment is improving.

About Cancer.im

Founded in memory of Robert Ryan, www.Cancer.im  is a social network for cancer patients, advocates, and volunteers. Members can connect to other people affected by cancer, organize the personal and professional resources available to them, research the qualitative and quantitative aspects of cancer, and create a customized strategy for beating or preventing the disease.

Cancer.im is guided by the following principles which collectively make up our mission.

1. Cancer is a generic term used to describe a unique disease. We want to empower every cancer patient with the information and resources they need to create a customized cancer strategy as unique as they are.

2. Cancer experiences are often characterized by feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. We want to turn cancer patients from hopeless to hopeful, and cancer advocates from helpless to helpful.

3. Every individual who has been through an experience with cancer has unique wisdom that others can benefit from. We want to harvest and organize this wisdom and make it available to the world.

4. Cancer patients who have an active support network outlive cancer patient who do not. We want to empower every cancer patient, regardless of their ability to pay, with the ability of organizing and managing their own support network and outlive this disease.

5. Increasing a cancer patient’s quality of life directly lowers the incidence of morbidity. We want to organize and empower those who surround a patient with the knowledge and ability to directly affect that patient’s quality of life for the better by alleviating the daily burden associated with cancer.

About the Robert Ryan Cancer Protocol

The Robert Ryan Cancer Protocol is based on the pioneering work of Dr. Nicos Nikolau, who in October of 2007 published a study titled “Quality of Life (QOL) Supersedes the Classic Predictors of Survival in Locally Advanced Non Small Cell Lung Cancer”  This Rosetta Stone study was the first time that a qualitative measure (Quality of Life) was validated in an evidenced based medicine study to have validated medical benefit.

Leveraging the EORTC (European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer) QLQ-30 index and social networking advancements, the Robert Ryan Cancer Protocol is the engine behind www.cancer.im.

Cancer.im is a 15 part modular best practice dissemination of the most common elements which cancer patients need help with.  Organized in a single user interface, cancer.im leverages social networking advancements to hopefully create the largest online social support network of cancer patients, volunteers and cancer resources.
