Dr. Barr to Stop Performing Breast Implants

(Newswire.net — July 3, 2019) West Palm Beach, FL — After 33 years of medical practice, Dr. Fredric Barr, of Palm Beach Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, will no longer be performing elective breast implants.         

Due to ongoing FDA investigations, further scientific studies, and continued controversy, including legitimate patient concerns about their bodies and health, Dr. Barr has chosen to step away from performing elective breast implant procedures. 

In many cases, Dr. Barr’s patients are electing to have their implants removed through a procedure called Breast Implant Explantation (En Bloc). 

Some women with breast implants are reporting autoimmune disorders, hormonal imbalances and gastrointestinal problems. There is also a subset of patients with breast implants who have developed BIA-ALCL (breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma), a rare type of lymphoma. 

The term Breast Implant Illness (BII), is used to describe a myriad of symptoms that women with breast implants have reported. Reported symptoms include but are not limited to fatigue, memory loss, rash, “brain fog,” joint pain, headaches, muscle pain, hair loss, repeated infections, swollen lymph nodes and glands, gastrointestinal upset, weight loss, weight gain, severe bloating, insomnia, anxiety and depression. 

Although the association between breast implants and hormonal, thyroid, or other autoimmune type illnesses has yet to be definitively and scientifically established by the medical community, research is ongoing.  

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still considers certain types of breast implants to be safe but lists Breast Implant Illness and BIA-ALCL as potential risks.

While the scientific research around Breast Implant Illness is ongoing and has yet to provide any clarity around the cause of these health issues, thousands of women around the world are presenting and reporting symptoms. Dr. Barr is listening to his patients’ concerns and responding to them by changing the way he chooses to practice.
