(Newswire.net — November 23, 2016) Santa Monica, California — Dr. Michael Sinel provides a different perspective on back pain, discussing one of the ways that could be causing it. According to him, back pain may all be in the patient’s head. What this means is that, if they could get a certain thought out of their head, their back pain may actually go away.
Dr. Sinel is a reputable expert in back pain and spinal disorders. Board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, he is currently an attending physician at the UCLA Spine Center. He has been featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and other national television and radio programs. He also provides lectures all throughout the United States, and has authored various scientific papers.
Dr. Sinel believes that back pain does not necessarily have to be caused by bodily malfunctions and that it may be caused instead by stress, an unmet ambition or painful emotions. Due to this belief, he has been using a different approach to treating back pain that is purely psychological—no medication, surgery or physical therapy. “Back pain, although physical, may not necessarily be due to some structural abnormality,” says Dr. Sinel. “It may be generated in patients when they put themselves under too much pressure to be good or perfect.” Dr. Sinel adds that individuals who tend to put other people’s needs ahead of their own are the ones most likely to suffer from back pain with emotional underpinnings.
This psychological approach to back pain, however, is not actually a new concept. It was pioneered by Dr. Sinel’s mentor, Dr. John E Sarno, a former professor of rehabilitation medicine at the New York University School of Medicine who wrote a best-selling book called Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection in 1991. According to Dr. Sarno, patients suffering from psychological back pain should address any repressed emotion and resume all normal physical activity since the pain they are experiencing is only psychological.
Dr. Sinel has been using the psychological approach to treating back pain and has been largely successful. He has already treated numerous patients with chronic back pain and continues to share his back pain treatment to those who cannot find a way to end their chronic pain.
He is currently teaching mindfulness meditation and yoga at the UCLA School of Medicine, and is also maintaining a private practice in Los Angeles specializing in stress-related back and neck pain and spinal disorders.
