Expert Offers Tips To Save Corroded Flashlight

(Newswire.net — August 4, 2016) Fort Worth, Texas — The number one step to take to help to protect batteries is to store them properly.  Although there can be many reasons that can contribute to alkaline batteries leaking, one of the main reasons  is exposure to large temperature changes.  This is especially true for flashlights that are stored inside of vehicles that may be subject to extreme hot and cold temperatures.

“When you put a flashlight in the glove box of your car or truck, large temperature changes that occur during the course of the year will cause the batteries to drain sooner and the batteries internal seals to wear down more quickly,” according to William Sims, President of Viisliam, a flashlight manufacturer.

“When an alkaline battery ages or discharges, the chemistry of the battery is altered and a byproduct of this change in the batteries chemical makeup is the production of hydrogen gas,” said Sims.  “When enough of this hydrogen gas is present, it can result  in the pressure inside the battery reaching a point that causes the battery seal to break, thus allowing potassium hydroxide to leak out.”

The best way to avoid damage to a flashlight by battery leakage, is to store the batteries outside of the flashlight itself.  Be careful not to use different brands of batteries in the same flashlight, as this can lead to reverse charging, which can weaken the batteries housing and make them more subject to leaking.  Also make sure to examine batteries looking for signs of damage or denting.  This type of external damage can be a sign that internal damage has occurred to the cell walls of the battery and this may lead to leakage.

If a flashlight has been damaged as a result of a leaking battery, the flashlight can be cleaned using white vinegar and a brush small enough to fit inside the flashlight housing.  The acid in the white vinegar will help to clean and remove the potassium hydroxide residue left behind by the leaking battery.  Since potassium hydroxide can cause irritation to skin, always were protective gloves when cleaning a flashlight.

When the cleaning process has been completed, simply rinse the flashlight under running water and let it dry completely before using it again.
