(Newswire.net — March 23, 2017) Orlando, FL — It is not a secret that pain is inevitable for many individuals who suffer from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). While there are pain medications available, it is imperative to practice measures that may help to reduce the likelihood of pain.

Experts reveal the triggers that may worsen rheumatoid arthritis joint pain. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic health condition that causes swelling, pain, and fatigue. Joint damage may be delayed and even prevented when sufferers are treated at an earlier stage.

Early treatment may also help sufferers improve their mobility and live a healthier life. An important part of arthritis treatment is to simply avoid joint pain triggers, such as smoking.

According to Kevin Deane, MD, a rheumatologist and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine at the Anschultz Medical Campus, smoking is not just linked with the increased risk of RA development but also the worsening of joint pain.

The research featured in the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology also revealed that RA sufferers who smoke are less likely to respond to a certain pharmaceutical drug, which is the common first-line of RA treatment.

Living a sedentary lifestyle may also trigger joint pain. It is imperative that sufferers are physically active to maintain a healthy weight. According to a study published in the Journal of Aging Research, arthritis sufferers should stay physically active as a sedentary lifestyle is significantly detrimental to overall health. Being physically inactive may also reduce muscle strength, which can result in decreased protection of joints.

While exercise is essential for individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, they should avoid doing high-impact exercise, such as running. Intense physical activities may result in joint pain during RA flares or in individuals with advanced RA.

There are, however, gentle range-of-motion exercises, such as stretching, that promote joint flexibility. Sufferers should not force themselves to do high impact exercises, especially when their joints are inflamed. They may engage in low-impact exercises such as walking, and then gradually increase their workout intensity. Other triggers to avoid are stress, and being overweight.

In addition to avoiding joint pain triggers, RA sufferers are also advised to follow an anti-inflammatory diet. Consuming potential anti-inflammatories such as turmeric has been believed to be helpful for individuals with rheumatoid arthritis.

Turmeric contains a bioactive ingredient called curcumin, which may offer anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin is thought to be responsible for many of turmeric’s potential health benefits.

Curcumin is also thought to contain antioxidant, antibacterial, antibiotic, antiviral, antiseptic, and anti-carcinogenic properties.
