Experts Warn Unhealthy Lifestyles Does More Damage To The Heart Than Genetics

The findings of this research were presented at a meeting of the European Society of Cardiology.

The investigators have found that an unhealthy lifestyle increases the odds of heart disease significantly more than one’s genetic make-up. 

Further, the results of this research have demonstrated factors like diabetes, hypertension, physical inactivity, smoking, and high cholesterol were strong players in the increased likelihood. 

The researchers recommend making healthy lifestyle habits a top priority in the prevention of heart disease. This is also applicable among individuals with a family history of the condition. 

They recruited 1,075 subjects who had an average age of 45 years. It is also worth mentioning that 555 of them had premature coronary artery disease (CAD), including certain conditions like stable angina, unstable angina and heart attack.

The study author, Joao Sousa of Funchal Hospital, Portugal, says that while genetics is an essential contributor to premature heart disease, it should not be used as an excuse to assume its development is inevitable.

While the study findings show that genetics contribute to CAD, genetics play a less decisive role in its development in those with two or more modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. This essentially means that exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and having a healthy diet are vital.

It is similarly important to get blood pressure and cholesterol levels in check.
