Exterior Shutters Aren't Just For the Front of the House Anymore

(Newswire.net — March 19, 2013) Dallas, TX — The concept of exterior shutters has taken on a whole new meaning now that O’Hair Shutters Ltd. has introduced their new O’Hair Exteriors™ line of shutters.  Always the innovators, instead of using toxic chemicals to preserve the wood, they utilize a proprietary heat treating process that alters the wood’s cellular structure, rendering it inert. It won’t rot or warp and insects can’t eat it- plus it’s totally green. Another happy outcome of the heat-treating process is that the wood becomes a chocolate brown throughout, and when sealed, takes on a beautiful, deep mahogany color. Of course, they can be painted as well.

Now, it’s possible to put plantation style shutters virtually anywhere- and for half the cost of a similar redwood or cypress exterior shutter. One new use is for outdoor kitchens and patios. Whether for privacy, sun control or even breeze control, large shutter panels with fully operational louvers can now be mounted outside without fear of them being destroyed by the weather or by bugs.

“Think about it- massive 50” wide panels with 5” spaced louvers hanging from a track or joined together, creating a wall of shutters up to 11 feet tall- nothing like this has ever really been available to the homeowner before now”, said Universal Window Coverings owner, Michael Coronato. “This opens up endless possibilities to anyone who has some sort of outdoor patio or deck.” he said. “Outdoor living spaces are big here in Texas. Now they’ve just gotten a lot more versatile.”

Universal Window Coverings has grown to be the largest dealer of O’Hair plantation shutters in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. In the shutter industry since 1991, Mike Coronato started his business in a humble 1000 sq. ft. metal storage building. In 2004 they bought the building they currently occupy which is almost 21,000 sq. ft. and is conveniently located just a few miles west of the Dallas Design District. Last year Mr.  Coronato published his “Consumer’s Guide to Plantation Shutters” which is available on Kindle or for free on Universal’s website.

Up until now, Universal has been exclusively in the interior plantation shutters business. “This will change the way people think about exterior shutters”, Coronato said, “Whether it’s one or two panels on the side of your porch to act as a privacy screen, or as a great wall of shutters in an outdoor kitchen to provide protection from the wind, practically everyone has some sort of outdoor area where these could be used.”
