June 22, 2009 (NEWSWIRE.NET) – The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute announced today that they are holding their 105th Convention and Annual Meeting to be held June 28th to June 30, 2009 at Snowmass Village, Colorado.
The theme of the annual meeting and convention is titled “Into the Headwinds of Change” will start at 9:00 am at the Anderson Hoagland ballroom with the legendary Apollo 13 Mission Director, Gene Kranz Key Note Address.
Gene Kranz – was the leader of the “Tiger Team” of NASA flight directors who guided the crippled Apollo 13 spacecraft safely back to Earth. His role in the crisis now legendary, Kranz was made famous by his oft-quoted phrase, Failure is not an option.” Following the inspiring success of the Apollo 13 mission, Gene Kranz was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his leadership, heroism, and steely resolve. In Ron Howard’s epic film, Apollo 13, he was portrayed by actor Ed Harris.

- There will be a short course on Maintenance and Reliability scheduled for June 26 and 27, 2009.
- Safety awards presented to the underground and surface mines with “0” losses.
- Nine Mine Rescue teams will be outside the property around the Silvertree Hotel. They will be performing realistic evaluation scenarios. Full gear, victims, and evaluators will all add to the unbelievable skills these teams possess and use to rescue miners in the case of an incident where miners may be trapped or hurt.
- Approximately 450 participants from over 20 states, mostly mining engineers, will listen to the 11 industry speakers, partake in a participatory rodeo/BBQ at the Snowmass Rodeo Grounds on Monday night, and watch the presentation of eight $4,000 scholarships to students in their junior/senior year of college in engineering disciplines.
