Give Plants the Right pH to Flourish

(Newswire.net — June 12, 2018) Cheyenne, Wyoming — Almost everything is affected by pH levels and soil in one’s backyard is no different. Each type of plant grows best in a specific pH range so learning the likes and dislikes of the flora to be gracing one’s garden is critical to their health and growth. The amount of nutrient available in the soil is one of the main factors to bear in mind alongside soil structure and the likes which actually all affect soil pH level.

“Soil pH is the measure of the acidity (sourness) or alkalinity (sweetness) of a soil,” explains the University of Vermont Extension Department of Plant and Soil Science. “A simple numerical scale is used to express pH. The scale goes from 0.0 – 14.0, with 0.0 being most acid, and 14.0 being most alkaline. The value, 7.0 is neutral–i.e., neither acid nor alkaline. The pH is not an indication of fertility, but it does affect the availability of fertilizer nutrients. A soil may contain adequate nutrients yet growth may be limited by a very unfavorable pH. Likewise, builder’s sand, which is virtually devoid of nutrients, may have an optimum pH for plant growth.”

The alkalinity or acidity of one’s soil determines which plants flourish and which plants unfortunately wither. Putting a plant that enjoys lots of water loose sandy soil then placing a shrub that gets water logged easily in clay is like consigning each to slow death. Every plant has specific needs when it comes to soils and this ought to be respected.

“It is important to note that the pH scale is a logarithmic scale, meaning that each whole number is a factor of 10 larger or smaller than the one next to it,” explains Garden.com. “For example, a soil with a pH of 9.5 is ten times more alkaline than a soil with a pH of 8.5 and 100 times more alkaline than a soil with a pH of 7.5. Adjusting soil acidity or alkalinity can dramatically improve your soil compared to other soil amending practices. Simply bringing your soil into the optimal pH range increases the number of available to your plants without adding any additional fertilizers.”
