(Newswire.net — August 31, 2017) Orlando, FL — Dementia affects many people from around the world. There are pharmaceutical drugs formulated to fight the condition. However, there are also other options for individuals who want to resort to natural remedies.
Green tea is believed to be a powerful healing beverage against dementia. This drink is widely popular in China and other parts of the world.
It has been used since the ancient times as a beverage and a medicinal drink. Today, it is consumed not just in a form of a drink, but also through supplementation.
According to new research, high green tea consumption could potentially reduce the risk of dementia. This claim is backed by a preliminary study conducted by some researchers.
The study had 500 participants, and was presented at the Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease Conference in Nice, France. The researchers came from the Kanazawa University Graduate School of Medical Science in Japan.
In 2007, two cognitive assessments were used to evaluate the cognitive function of the participants. These assessments were the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR).
There were 723 participants who were 60 years old and older and who did not suffer from dementia. During the assessment, the blood test of the participants were taken as well as an assessment of their APOE genotype.
The participants were grouped entirely based on their green tea drinking habits. It has been found that non-drinkers of green tea had slightly lower MMSE scores. However, it is important to note that the scores didn’t mean they had dementia or cognitive impairment.
Researchers conclude that green tea consumption could be beneficial for cognitive functions.
The Alzheimer’s Australia Your Brain Matters website reveals that consumption of green tea could potentially aid in reducing the risk of dementia. This beverage contains antioxidants, which have long been believed to offer many health benefits.
Green tea possesses resveratrol, which is also an antioxidant. Resveratrol is popularly found in red wine. This type of antioxidant has been thought to enhance brain health as well as reduce the risk of dementia.
The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease published a study that reveals extracts of green tea combined with exercise have been able to delay Alzheimer’s disease progression.
The study was conducted with the use of the brains of mice. There are resveratrol supplements available nowadays, and some contain green tea extracts. The best ones contain not just extracts of green tea, but also of grape seed, red wine, and Acai fruit.
