High Physical Activity Now Found to Counter Poor Sleep

A study has shown that individuals with the poorest sleep and had the least exercise are at the highest risk of death and ill health. Particularly, they are more prone to stroke, heart disease, and cancer.

The researchers looked into information involving 380,055 middle-aged (average age 55) men and women who took part in the UK Biobank study. It is worth noting the UK Biobank tracks the long term health of more than half a million 37-73 year olds recruited from across the UK between 2006 and 2010.

The subjects provided information on their normal weekly physical activity levels. These were measured in Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) minutes. These are approximately equivalent to the amount of calories or energy expended every minute of physical activity.

For instance, 600 MET minutes every week is the equivalent of 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity or over 75 minutes of vigorous intensity physical activity a week.

For an average of 11 years up to May 2020 or death, the researchers tracked the health of the participants. They looked into assessing the risk of death from any cause as well as from all types of cardiovascular disease.

These particularly include coronary heart disease, stroke, and all types of cancer, especially lung cancer.

There were 15,503 people who died during the monitoring period. It is worth noting that 4095 were from any type of cardiovascular disease and 9064 were from all types of cancer. Of these, there were 1932 individuals who died due to coronary heart disease, 359 from a brain bleed (haemorrhagic) stroke, 450 from a blood clot (ischaemic) stroke and 1595 from lung cancer.
