How Do Female Voiceovers Stack Against Male Voice Talent?

(Newswire.net — July 7, 2013) London, UK — In this age of equality, it almost seems sacrilage to point out that there are genuine differences between genders. There are relative strengths and relative weaknesses between men and women on a variety of issues. The question of whether men are better than women or women are better than men isn’t always appropriate. Especially in business, the better question is who is the most appropriate person to fulfil this particular task.

With voiceover artists, the tonality, timbre and pitch of the voice can make a measurable impact on the effectiveness of how well the marketing message is delivered and received. The male larynx is larger and men will tend to take a larger intake of air – partly due to their bigger thorax and partly due to the finding that men are more likely to breathe from their abdomen. These factors give a lower pitch, such that men’s voices tend to be an octave lower than women’s. This difference may differ on a case by case basis, but on average, this is a reproducible finding.

A deeper voice tends to convey authority. Research and experience tells us that authority figures are more likely to persuade than non authority figures. For this reason, if your advert has an instructive feel to it, then you might consider a male voice talent to be the correct choice for your voiceover artist.
